Summer Lake School Construction Updates

Superintendent's Update - August 12, 2019

I want to say thank you to the Staff for your flexibility and the amazing way you have opened up the 2019-2020 school year while being a school within a school.  To the right are some pictures of progress being made that show the concrete walkway that has been poured in the first set of buildings as well as the other areas being formed and ready to pour.  The pouring of concrete was delayed due to a hold up in getting the water to the school hooked up.  Without the water being hooked up, they could not test the pipes that are running under the concrete that is being poured.  There would obviously be a big problem if the pipes were to leak under the concrete.  The plan is now to continue to pour the concrete next to the classrooms and near the restroom areas before moving to the quad area and the front of the school.  If you have been out to the Summer Lake Site you can see that a lot of the preparation work has been completed for most of the concrete and the pouring of concrete will continue to be happening over the coming days.

I can only imagine how difficult it has been for you to hear of these delays, as it has been frustrating for me to continue to say that we are at the mercy of a lot of variables.  Each thing that must happen is dependent upon something else being completed before it can happen and that has been our hold up.  This has been, and remains to be, the situation with the school being connected to PG&E.  We are in need of having PG&E hooked up before the classrooms can have the flooring installed and all the little finishing touches.  Due to having all of the utilities run in the walls and ceiling, all of them must be checked and up and running before the finished flooring can be installed.  Once the utilities are all up and running and have been checked, the finish flooring installation will begin.  At that same time, the permanent classroom doors will be installed and the final touches in each of the classrooms will be completed.

I know that the burning question is, “When will this take place?”  To that, as of today, I cannot give you a set date.  I can tell you that I have personally called every boss that I could get a number for that works for PG&E to try to speed up this process.  In addition, can tell you that I will be providing you a weekly update with photos as well as information that is shared at the weekly construction meetings.  (You can expect this update no later than end of Day Tuesday of each week)  I apologize for not having a more specific update at this time; however, I will continue to provide you with information as it comes to me.  I truly thank you for making a difference for the students of Summer Lake School and I will continue to do all that I can to make the opening of “Summer Lake School” happen as quickly as possible.

Have a great rest of your day and an awesome week.  Thanks for all that you do.  Go Sea Turtles!!!  Greg
